The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was marked by high levels of ethnic diversity and by relative religious tolerance,[11][12] though the degree of religious tolerance varied over time.[13]

After several decades of prosperity,[14][15][16] it entered a period of protracted political,[8][17] military and economic[18] decline. Its growing weakness led to its partitioning among its more powerful neighbors, Austria, Prussia and Russian Empire, during the late 18th century. Shortly before its demise, the Commonwealth adopted a massive reform effort and enacted the Constitution of May 3, 1791, which has been described as the second oldest codified national constitution of modern history.[19][20][21][22]
